FAQ

WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?

ONYX Wellness massage therapists are licensed professionals and are held to the highest standards of the American Massage Therapy Association and Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals.

Massage therapy involves using different pressures, movements and techniques to manipulate muscles and other soft tissues within the body. With a goal of slowing down your nervous system, massage therapy can be used to release stress and tension, provide relief from chronic and acute symptoms, heal injuries and support wellness.

Massage Therapist do not diagnose illness, disease or any other physical or mental disorder. As such, the massage therapist does not prescribe medical treatment or pharmaceuticals nor is any spinal adjustment performed.

Massage therapy is not a substitute for medical attention, and it is essential that all health information provided be true and correct. The massage therapist is required to refer you for diagnosis and to follow recommendations of your physician.

Please speak with your therapist or contact us directly before your appointment regarding any specific treatments or modalities.

WHEN SHOULD I NOT GET A MASSAGE?

Massage therapy is not recommended for any of the following reasons:

- Pregnant persons should check with their doctor first if they are considering getting any kind of massage. Very deep massage is NEVER recommended for pregnant individuals. The therapists at Onyx are specifically trained in providing safe prenatal massage.

- Infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds.

- Currently suffering from mild-severe fever or any COVID-19 symptoms.

- Immediately after surgery.

- Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor.

- Individuals with osteoporosis should consult their doctor before getting a massage.

- Prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage.

- Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent fractures.

THIS IS MY FIRST MASSAGE, WHAT DO I DO?

Relax! Your therapist will talk with you before the massage starts about what your goals for the session are. This is your chance to ask any questions you have or to make any requests about pressure, areas of focus or areas of the body to avoid. After your consultation, the therapist will step out of the room and allow you to undress and get onto the table. You can undress as much as you are comfortable, usually down to the underwear (bras off for those who wear them), or full nude. Professional draping is always practiced. The privacy and comfort of the client on the table is always top priority.

WHAT IS "DRAPING" AND IS IT OPTIONAL?

Draping is how the therapist will uncover parts of the body throughout the massage. If you are receiving work on your back, for example, your back will be uncovered down to your hips and when the work is done the area will be recovered. For work on your leg, the leg will be exposed, worked on, covered...and the pattern continues. Draping is not optional. All sessions are strictly professional and clients will be appropriately covered for the comfort and wellbeing of both client and massage therapist.

DO YOU OFFER PRENATAL MASSAGE?

Yes! Please choose the “prenatal” session when booking your session. We have face down and side lying bolster options. If you do not see how to request those options, please book your massage and then give us a call so we can request it for you from our end.

CAN I WORK OUT AFTER RECEIVING MASSAGE?

For healthy individuals it will be perfectly safe for you to work out the same day as your massage as long as you give yourself a good amount of recovery time and stay hydrated. We would not suggest to go max out on weights or do a super hard run or to attempt anything that wouldn't be "normal" for you...but the best advice would be to simply use your best judgement. If something feels wrong, don't do it.

WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?

Currently, due to COVID-19, Onyx is encouraging all payments do be done via credit or debit card. Cash payments are accepted, but the studio does not have a cash drawer for change. If you are planning to pay with cash, please bring the exact amount for the cost of your session. We appreciate your understanding.

DO I NEED TO TIP MY SERVICE PROVIDER?

No! ONYX Wellness operates as a gratuity-free facility. We pay our licensed professional therapists a higher rate to ensure a more regular and stable income for them as well as greater accessibility for our clients. So, what to do if your therapist is amazing? BOOK AGAIN!
